Election 2024 Movie Review: A Political Thriller Set in Local Elections
Performances That Stand Out
As Natarasan, Vijay Kumar is earnest in his role. One of the film’s strongest moments is his emotional breakdown before the climax. But since Preethi Asrani mostly appears only in song sequences for most of the first half, the chemistry fails to add for the first half. She becomes significant in the second half, but her role feels two-dimensional. Though George Marion is strong willed as Nallasivam, he does not quite deliver the goods at important points. Paval Navageethan in a pivotal role, does a good job of keeping the narrative afloat as well.
A Story That Had Potential
The premise of the film is powerful, and crafting the story around a local election is quite unique. It’s a shame that the execution faltered. There is a major disconnect between the screenplay and the very audience it is supposed to reach. The emotional rift in the father-son duo should be more pronounced, but they lose it towards the tail end of the spectrum. There are not enough powerful scenes to validate his character for the narrative and this is especially true for the former panchayat president, who believes that this post is the ultimate privilege.

Music and Cinematography
The music of Govind Vasantha is far from being impactful. The background score does little to magnify the drama on screen. The drone shots are well made but the landscape is not captured adequately by Mahendran Jayaraju’s cinematography. Certain scenes feel visually weak and hence, diminishes the force of the strong dialogues being delivered.
A Weak Screenplay That Hurts the Film
Director Tamil, who previously made Sethuman, has taken a different approach with Election. This time, he leans toward commercial elements but fails to bring the same emotional depth his first film had. The screenplay feels disconnected, and there are no gripping scenes that hold the audience’s attention. Songs appear every 20 minutes, disrupting the flow of the narrative rather than adding value.
Political Depth Missing in the Dialogues
While the film attempts to discuss caste and social issues, it does not fully explore them. The dialogues, filled with poetic metaphors, fail to deliver a strong political statement. Deeper insights into the election process and its effect on common people would have made the film more impactful.
A Film That Could Have Been More
Election is not a bad film, but it does not leave a strong impression either. It scratches the surface of an important issue but never goes deep enough to leave an impact. While the intention behind the film is commendable, it lacks a compelling screenplay, strong character arcs, and a background score that could have added more depth to the emotions portrayed.
